It eliminates the need for Network Address Translation and RFC 1918 private addresses which have caused numerous problems with the IPv4 Internet. IPv6 was specified in 1995, but major adoption began in 2014. It is now at 50-70% in various countries, especially in telcos. 5G telephony is the "grand convergence" of global telephony with the IPv6 Internet.
